Tunnel between Spain and Morocco: a breakthrough for campers?

Jos Mark

An ambitious plan to connect Spain and Morocco via an undersea railway tunnel has been revived. The tunnel is expected to be completed by 2030, as Morocco, Portugal, and Spain will be hosting the FIFA World Cup that year. However, meeting that deadline seems highly unlikely. If the tunnel between Spain and Morocco becomes a reality, it will revolutionize camper travel. Simply drive your camper or caravan onto the train, and in just 20 minutes, you'll arrive on another continent.

An undersea railway tunnel is a complex project, but Europe has done it before with the tunnel between France and England. A tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar has long been desired, as current travel depends on slow ferry crossings. Concrete research is now underway, with the goal of having the tunnel operational by the World Cup. Yet, that deadline seems too optimistic.

Technical challenges

With a planned length of 28 kilometers and a depth of 475 meters below sea level, the tunnel is intended to connect Punta Paloma in southern Spain with Cap Malabata in northern Morocco. This is considered one of the most complex infrastructure projects in the world. Engineers must account for tectonic plates, solid rock formations, and strong sea currents. Despite innovative solutions, such as prefabricated tunnels placed on the seabed, experts estimate the project’s success rate at 60 percent. This was reported by the British newspaper The Telegraph in a recent overview of international infrastructure projects.

Camping in Morocco

For campers eager to explore Morocco, the tunnel could be a game-changer. But if you don’t want to wait until the tunnel is built and plan to travel there sooner, be prepared for differences in campsite facilities compared to Europe. Moroccan campsites often offer less comfort, and electricity is not always stable. Sanitary facilities can also be lacking.

However, more luxurious campsites can be found in popular tourist destinations such as Agadir and Marrakesh. In other parts of Morocco, camping is more about the unique experience rather than luxury.

Faster access to Africa

The tunnel between Spain and Morocco would be a major improvement for campers traveling with their own vehicles. If completed, it would make the journey faster, easier, and likely more affordable. Until then, the ferry remains the only option to reach Morocco with a camper or caravan.
