Ponte Vecchio

From Paris to Barcelona: renovations of European hotspots in 2025

Jos Mark

Campers beware! If you're planning to visit European hotspots this year, you might encounter renovation work. Several iconic locations, including the Eiffel Tower, are being renovated and are temporarily less accessible. Here's what you can expect.

Maintenance on the Eiffel Tower

If you’re a winter camper and planning to visit Paris soon, be aware of renovation work on the Eiffel Tower, one of the most famous European hotspots. The top floor will be closed for renovation until February 7, 2025, but fortunately, the first and second floors remain accessible. Looking for a campsite near Paris? Camping La Belle Étoile offers good access to the French capital.

Ponte Vecchio in Florence being renovated

The Ponte Vecchio, the most famous bridge in Florence, is undergoing its first major restoration in 700 years. The work focuses on strengthening and cleaning the substructure. During the spring and summer of 2025, parts of the bridge may be less accessible. The Corridoio Vasariano is already open again. This passage behind the Ponte Vecchio – between the Palazzo Vecchio and the Palazzo Pitti – was closed in 2016 for safety reasons. After eight years of renovation, the Corridoio reopened to the public at the end of last year.

Holy Year in Rome

In Rome, everything is focused on the Holy Year 2025, a unique event that takes place once every 25 years. It is expected to attract 35 million visitors. Many landmarks, such as the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona, are accessible, but renovations to roads and the metro system may cause some inconveniences. For campers, there are several campsites just outside the city, from where you can easily reach Rome by public transport.

Sagrada Familia: completion is getting closer

For over 140 years, construction has been ongoing on the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, which has become one of the most famous European hotspots. Although the original plan was for completion in 2026, the world-renowned basilica by Gaudí is now expected to be fully completed in 2033. If you plan to visit before then, you should be prepared for ongoing work. This year, construction will continue on the highest tower, dedicated to Jesus Christ.

If you’d like to combine a visit to the city with a beach holiday, that’s no problem. The coastline around Barcelona is full of campsites.
