Gotthard Tunnel closed in 2025: on these days you should avoid it

Jos Mark

Are you planning to go camping in Italy this spring or autumn and want to drive through the Gotthard Tunnel? Then pay attention, because in 2025, the Swiss tunnel will be closed slightly more often than usual due to maintenance work. With proper preparation, this doesn’t have to be an obstacle, of course. The first step is to read this article.

The Gotthard Tunnel is the most important north-south connection for travelers heading to Italy. Every year, it closes a few times, but in 2025, this will happen no less than 34 times. The Gotthard Pass is an alternative, but it is not suitable for caravans and motorhomes. Another option is a significant detour via the San Bernardino Tunnel, but that will cost you extra time. The fastest route to and from Italy is therefore through the Gotthard Tunnel.

When is the Gotthard Tunnel closed?

Fortunately, the tunnel maintenance does not take place during the peak season. So, in July and August, the Gotthard Tunnel remains open. You can also drive through it on weekends without any issues. The closures will occur from March to October, usually from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Below is the exact schedule of when the tunnel will be closed:

  • March 31 – April 4
  • June 2 – 6
  • June 10 – 12
  • June 16 – 18
  • June 23 – 27
  • September 8 – 12
  • September 15 – 19
  • September 22 – 26
  • September 29 – October 3
  • October 6 – 8

Other construction work in 2025

In addition to the Gotthard Tunnel, there are other Alpine routes with restrictions. For example, this month, construction work has started on the Brenner Pass in Austria. Furthermore, the Mont Blanc Tunnel between France and Italy will be regularly closed in both directions during the evening and night until March.
