BiVan: French caravan inspired by vans

Jos Mark

Anyone who is torn between a caravan and a camper van will surely be charmed by the BiVan. This caravan from the French company Bivoak offers the best of both worlds. The BiVan has the layout of a van, the space of a caravan, and the double door is a clear nod to the legendary Volkswagen T1.

The BiVan was designed by Breton friends Vincent Clédic and Antoine Henaff. They were looking for a camping vehicle that combines the advantages of a van (mobility) with those of a caravan (comfort). The result is the BiVan. The fitting name is derived from the word ‘Bevan’, which means ‘to live’ in Breton. But not only the name is original, the concept itself is also quite unique.

Small caravan with great possibilities

With its dimensions of 5.14 x 1.95 x 1.89 meters (LxWxH) and a weight of 1000 kg, the BiVan is too large to be considered a minicamping trailer. However, its low height makes it aerodynamic, and it fits in most garage spaces. If you’re taller than 1.89 meters, there’s no need to worry about bumping your head. The BiVan features a large pop-up roof, which increases the standing height. Additionally, it creates a sleeping area of 1.60 x 1.90 meters.

The BiVan’s rounded shape gives it an appearance that balances between retro and modern. The body is made of monocoque polyester, known for its waterproof qualities. The chassis is specifically designed for the BiVan and inspired by boat trailers. This means the axle is positioned as far back as possible to increase stability. Once you arrive at your destination, no support legs are needed to stabilize the caravan.

With its unique rear hatch, the BiVan is already a striking sight, but the real eye-catcher is, of course, the double access door, a tribute to the Volkswagen T1 that Westfalia launched in the 1950s.

Caravan with van interior

The layout of the BiVan is partly inspired by the camper van. We see a rear bench, a table, and two chairs placed opposite each other. These can be converted into a bed of 1.40 x 1.90 meters, bringing the total number of sleeping spaces in the caravan to four. The kitchenette and storage spaces are positioned along the side, just like in vans. The kitchen area includes a two-burner gas stove, a stainless steel sink, and a 65-liter refrigerator.

Unlike in a camper van, the BiVan also has a bathroom. There is actually space for one in the BiVan. It is located at the front and is equipped with a sink, a shower, and a toilet.

Camping in all seasons

According to the makers, the BiVan is suitable for traveling in all seasons. Insulation made of PET foam, double glazing, Truma heating, and the insulating cover for the pop-up roof suggest that they are right.
