We previously wrote about the unwritten rules of camping sanitation. About how you carefully choose your favorite toilet stall and why, once found, you rarely stray from it. But maybe we won’t need to make those choices anymore, because more and more campsites are now offering private sanitary facilities. Just your own toilet and shower. No surprises, no waiting lines, and yes: with toilet paper.
Research by camping specialist ACSI shows that the number of campsites with private sanitary facilities has grown by more than 20 percent in the past year. Nowadays, you can reserve your own toilet and shower at more than 1 in 10 campsites in Europe. Dutch campsites are leading the way in this regard.
Roughly half of the campsites with private sanitary facilities offer them in the central sanitation building. The other half provides individual stalls with a private toilet and shower at the camping spot. The latter is especially popular in the Netherlands and France, while reserved sanitation in the main building is more common in Italy and Germany.
However, the toilet situation on some campsites is still quite the adventure. At 1 in 5 campsites in Europe, you still have to bring your own toilet paper. In Italy, this applies to more than half of the campsites. And let’s not even get started on the infamous squat toilet, which can still be found at 10% of campsites (mainly in France and Italy). Something to keep in mind if the very thought of it gives you a stomach ache.
Back to our article about the toilet door lottery. That first time on a new campsite, conducting an almost scientific analysis of the toilets. Wondering behind which door you’ll find the quietest spot and where it’s the cleanest. Isn’t that just part of camping? If you opt for private sanitary facilities, you’ll miss out on that experience.
That’s why we’re curious: do you prefer private sanitary facilities, or do you go for the toilet door lottery?
