Driving for hours on end with a large electric camper is still a utopia. But if you are not a mile-eater and want to get a taste of electric camping, the hybrid Challenger ElectriX might be something for you.
Of course, electric campers already exist. Think of eVentje or the Tonke Buzz. However, it is mainly the camping buses that have an electric motor. The electrification of the larger campers is not yet that far, although Thor Industrie recently made a start with the first hybrid integral camper. And more camper builders are venturing into electric experiments, such as Challenger.
For the Challenger ElectriX, the French camper manufacturer is joining forces with Bedeo, a British company that specializes in the production of electric vehicles. Together, they did not develop a new camper, but they equipped two existing models with an electric motor: the Challenger X150 and X250.
The models in the Challenger ElectriX series are hybrid campers, equipped with a combustion engine (140 hp or 180 hp) and an electric motor. The latter has a 37 kWh battery, with a 90 kW motor and a torque of 1400 Nm.
On the electric motor, the Challenger ElectriX has a range of 100 kilometers. For a short trip, that is perfectly possible. Those who drive more kilometers switch to thermal mode. In that case, the combustion engine largely takes over the driving, with or without the support of the electric motor. In this mode, the camper has a range of 900 kilometers.
The Challenger X150 is 5.99 metres long and 2.10 metres wide. This compact semi-integrated is notable for its lack of a fixed bed in the rear. In that place, a bathroom has been placed across the entire width of the camper. The face-to-face seating area can be converted into a double bed and there is a lifting bed above it. Four campers can travel and spend the night in this camper.
The layout of the Challenger X250 is familiar to us from its sister brand Chausson, which markets this floor plan under the name X650. The Challenger X250 is 6.36 metres long and also 2.10 metres wide. In the back, this narrow semi-integrated does not have a shower and toilet, but a real changing room. There is also room for bicycles. The X250 has a vario bathroom and also face-to-face benches. Four people can travel and sleep in this as well.
Both the X150 and X250 are available in the Challenger ElectriX version. French prices start at €99,990.
