Bike Route of the Year 2025: the Göta Kanalleden in Sweden

Martine van der Klauw

Every year, visitors of the Cycling and Hiking Fair choose the most beautiful bike route of the year. This time, a route in Sweden came out on top: the Göta Kanalleden. This 220-kilometer-long route follows the Göta Canal between Sjötorp and Mem and combines stunning nature with rich history and unique sights.

The Göta Kanalleden is divided into seven stages, ranging in length from 15 to 56 kilometers. Most of the route runs along car-free bike paths, offering a relaxed and safe ride. Along the way, you cycle through vast forests, past meadows, and along picturesque waterways. The 58 locks along the canal are a special attraction. In some places, multiple lock gates are positioned in a row, allowing boats to move step by step.

What makes this route unique is the combination of cycling and sailing. Tired of pedaling for a while? Historic passenger boats sail part of the route daily, and you’re allowed to bring your bike on board. This makes the journey extra special and offers a welcome change during your ride.

The route not only offers beautiful nature but also interesting cultural landmarks. Along the canal, you’ll find various museums and historic towns. The jury of the Cycling and Hiking Fair praised the route’s versatility and the many informational panels you encounter along the way.

For campers, the Göta Kanalleden offers plenty of options. There are numerous campsites along the canal where you can enjoy the peace and space of the Swedish landscape. Many camping spots are located right by the water. Along the route, you’ll also find plenty of cozy cafés and eateries where you can enjoy local treats, such as freshly baked cinnamon buns.
