Inspired Overland Carbonlite is the world’s lightest hardshell rooftop tent

Jos Mark

Camping with a rooftop tent is popular, but installing it on a vehicle can be challenging. Many rooftop tents are heavy and bulky. The American company Inspired Overland came up with a solution by creating a model made of carbon fiber with an aluminum frame. Weighing just 36 kilograms, the Carbonlite is the world's lightest hardshell rooftop tent.

There are three different types of rooftop tents: softshell, hardshell, and hybrid, which is a combination of both. A softshell rooftop tent is made of fabric and lightweight. In general, they are less sturdy and more challenging to set up than a hardshell tent. A hardshell tent offers more protection but is heavier and harder to install. However, with the Inspired Overland Carbonlite, installation is a breeze—at least, if we are to believe the manufacturer…

Lightweight Inspired Overland rooftop tent

This rooftop tent combines an innovative design with lightweight materials and smart features. The Inspired Overland Carbonlite stands out with its unique construction of carbon fiber and aluminum. Thanks to this combination, the hardshell rooftop tent weighs just 36 kilograms, whereas similar models often weigh 50 kilograms or more. You can imagine that positioning this Carbonlite on your vehicle is much easier.

Additionally, when folded, the tent is only 12 centimeters high. This reduces air resistance while driving and helps keep fuel consumption low.

Rooftop tent for two people

The tent is designed for two people and offers a sleeping surface of 2.15 by 1.22 meters. The sturdy outer shell protects against rain and wind and features a skylight, allowing you to enjoy the starry sky.

The rooftop tent comes fully equipped with essentials, including an air mattress and a telescopic ladder. It also has T-slots for mounting accessories, such as an awning or extra storage space, as well as dedicated channels for heating or air conditioning.

For now, the Inspired Overland rooftop tent is only available in North America, but the manufacturer hopes to expand to the European market. If you don’t want to wait, you’ll need to order it from the U.S., where prices start at around €2,300, depending on the selected options—plus shipping costs.
