Sex at the campsite: this is how you prevent everyone from hearing it

Jos Mark

A creaking air mattress, children sleeping in the same space, a shaking caravan, and shadows on the tent fabric that leave nothing to the imagination. Sex at the campsite can be quite a challenge. How do you ensure that your romantic escapades remain private, even while camping?

Vacation is about relaxing and escaping the daily grind. For many couples, this has a positive effect on their sex life. But does the same apply when you’re camping? After all, privacy is often hard to find at a campsite.

No one wants to be an unwilling witness to their neighbors’ amorous adventures in their caravan, let alone hear the awkward giggles coming from the pop-up tent of the teenagers a few spots away. Likewise, you probably don’t want your own love life to become the talk of the campground. So how do you ensure that your romantic escapades don’t turn into the campsite’s main entertainment?

Camping is good for your sex life

Camping is good for your sex life, writes sexologist Alexander Witpas in the Flemish newspaper. He even suggests that a camping vacation might be especially beneficial for your sex life—more so than a trip that doesn’t involve camping. “One of the reasons we go on vacation is to break free from the monotony of daily life. And that makes sense, because no matter how many mindfulness courses, calendars, or coffee mugs we buy, routine is unavoidable. There’s always a lot to do and little time, so we create workable habits—otherwise, nothing would ever get done. The advantage of routines is that they allow us to accomplish a lot on autopilot, without much effort. But that’s also their downside: you do things out of habit, without really paying attention. Efficient, yes, but over time, heartbreakingly dull. And all of this, of course, applies to your sex life as well.

Thankfully, vacations exist. When you’re on holiday, different rules apply. There’s more time, fewer routines, and you’re often physically closer to your partner. And if you’re camping, there are even more benefits. You’re more connected to nature. You move around more and wear less clothing—or at least, more comfortable clothing. You encounter new people, new flavors, new sounds. All of this heightens your senses and makes you experience your surroundings—including your partner’s body—more intensely,” Witpas explains.

Sex at the campsite: practical Tips

Do you find sex at the campsite a hassle? The sexologist has a few tips to make things easier. “Choose a campsite with more space between the tents and try to get a spot not too far from the restrooms. If you’re bringing kids, bring a separate tent for them and check in advance if you can sign them up for group activities or excursions. Be mindful of alcohol. But even with the right preparation, it will still feel a bit thrilling—and that’s okay. Because in the worst case, everything goes completely wrong, and you’ll still have a collection of hilarious stories to laugh about together afterward.”
