If you're planning to travel to Italy via the Brenner Pass next year, be prepared for delays. Starting in January, a large-scale renovation of the Lueg Bridge, a key bridge on the Brenner Autobahn (A13), will take place. The work is expected to last until early 2027. But don’t worry—there are several alternative routes available.
The Brenner Autobahn is a crucial traffic artery connecting Innsbruck with the Brenner Pass, a mountain pass in the Alps between Austria and Italy. One of the most important bridges on this route, the 1.8-kilometer-long Lueg Bridge, is in urgent need of replacement after more than 55 years. During construction, only one lane per direction will remain open, making traffic jams and longer travel times inevitable. While there are plans to open extra lanes during peak periods, the situation is far from ideal for holidaymakers heading south. Fortunately, you don’t have to cancel your travel plans—there are multiple routes leading to Italy.
Although the Brenner Pass remains a popular route, there are several alternatives to avoid traffic jams.
Gotthard Tunnel (Switzerland)
For destinations such as Lake Como, Lake Maggiore, Tuscany, or Umbria, the route via Switzerland is an excellent option. The 16-kilometer-long Gotthard Tunnel is easily accessible, and no major roadworks are planned for 2025.
San Bernardino Pass (Switzerland)
This pass is a good alternative to the Gotthard Tunnel.
If you choose an alternative route through Switzerland, don’t forget to purchase a vignette.
Villach (Austria)
For those traveling towards the Adriatic coast or eastern Italy, the route via Villach is a great choice. However, expect additional travel time as this route covers more kilometers.
Felbertauernstraße (Fern Pass)
This scenic route through the Austrian Alps takes longer, but the breathtaking views make it worthwhile.
The Reschen Pass is usually a good alternative, but due to roadworks, this route will frequently be unavailable in 2025. It’s best to avoid it!
Whether you take your chances with the Brenner Pass or opt for an alternative route, delays seem inevitable. To make your journey as smooth as possible, here are a few tips:
The bottom line: The renovation of the Lueg Bridge on the Brenner Pass will pose a challenge for travelers in the coming years. Fortunately, there are several alternatives to ensure a smooth journey to Italy. Plan ahead, consider alternative routes to avoid congestion, and try to stay positive. After all, if you’re stuck in traffic, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the stunning scenery!
